I have been thinking of getting rid of the TV cable service (U-verse) for some time. The cost went from an introductory rate of $60/month, to $80/month, and most recently to $100/month. We have Netflix on top of that, for which we are paying $15/month. That gives us one rental DVD at home plus their streaming service.
The main thing I enjoyed on U-verse TV were the many racing programs on the Speed channel. Well, Speed was bought out by Fox. The number of motorcycle racing programs on Speed dwindled over the past few years, and now Fox has added a lot of boxing and ultimate fighting to their newly branded Fox Sports One channel. Oh well, I will flip over to Fuel TV to catch some races. Whoa, Fuel is now called Fox Sports Two, and it has a lot of boxing and ultimate fighting.
After talking to my wife, we came to the conclusion that the person who will most miss our current U200 TV lineup will be our son. He’s not a TV addict, but he likes to watch some of the Disney channel offerings, like Phineas & Ferb. My wife and son will miss current Dr. Who shows on BBC America channel, but Netflix eventually carries them.
My wife and I agreed that we would still like to be able to watch local channels and be able to record them. U-verse offers their Basic TV subscription for $20/month. Of course there is an additional $7/month for rental of a second receiver, and they add another $15/month to get DVR functionality. And there are also monthly broadcast fees and taxes. Sheesh.
Anyway, we just went from $100/month to $50/month. As I said to my wife, $50/month is not a lot of money, but it’s not just pocket change, either.
Have you reduced or cut the cable? What are your monthly charges if you still have cable service?
