Museum Membership

With the end of school and summer rapidly approaching, we are looking for inexpensive kid friendly things to do. We just visited a local technology museum and bought two annual memberships passes. This is a very kid friendly museum with lots of interactive learning centers, exhibits, and games. We have been there before, and it is always difficult to get our son to leave. From the museum’s web site,

Member Benefits

  • Unlimited admission to all our themed galleries, for a full year. Enjoy over 250 fun, interactive exhibits.
  • Free or discounted admission to over 250 ASTC science and technology museums worldwide.
  • Free admission to educational IMAX movies in the IMAX Dome Theater.
  • Paid subcription to the museum’s informative quarterly newsletter, calendar, and bi-weekly electronic newsletter.
  • Invitations to members-only events such as special IMAX screenings and parties.
  • Savings in The Museum Store, The CafĂ©, and IMAX concessions.
  • Members only birthday parties. We’ve just announced NEW Lab Parties! Choose one of our exciting interactive science lab experiences for your guests to enjoy.

The plan we bought for $100 was

  • Admission to exhibit galleries for two adults named on card plus three guests
  • Two transferable, one-time guest passes to the museum’s exhibit galleries
  • Two Cafe coupons
  • Two concessions coupons
  • $84 is tax deductible

The tax deduction means we can write off about $28, so the membership really cost us $72. The normal admission per person, any age, is $8 which includes an IMAX movie. So, today’s use for me, my wife and our son would have cost $36 regular admission. We have a net savings of $16 if my wife visits two more times with our son and his two cousins. This is a surety.

In fact, my wife is planning to visit at least once a month with them, and again once a month with our son, a playmate, and their mother. (There are seval regular playmates we have lined up for this.) We spent 5 hours there last Saturday, and our son did not want to leave. Perhaps after 6 or 8 more visits, he may not want to spend so much time, but there really are lots of things for kids and grownups to do. (If nothing else, the place is air conditioned.)

If you have kids and a technology museum or aquarium is nearby, you might want to consider buying a membership. It could save you money, plus be a great place to spend the long summer days. Again from the museum’s web site, “After visiting the museum, my children are constantly asking questions about all the technologies around our home or outside. They want to know how everything works!”
