Stuff Happens

Mondays are one of the days that my wife and I both work. My wife usually drops our son off at her sister’s, and I pick him up. That schedule will change shortly when school starts again, but that is not the subject of this post.

I picked our son up with no worries, brought him home, and proceeded to cook dinner. I was just finishing preparing dinner when the phone rang. Often this is my wife calling to say she is on her way home. It was my wife, but she was not headed home. She had, instead locked herself out of the truck. (She needed the truck to deliver a launch vehicle part to Fed-Ex for delivery to Vandenberg AFB.)

Hey, stuff happens!

We live 13 miles from work. It is mostly freeways, but it still takes 20-25 minutes each way if traffic is light or we are in the car pool lane. So, I turned off the stove, covered the dinner pot, grabbed our son, and drove back to work.

Two things bothered me on the way there. One was the gas we had to waste by driving an extra 26 miles. Number two, and this was the biggie since it could have prevented number “one,” was why hadn’t I put a duplicate key in a magnetic hide-a-key under the truck? You can be sure that I will go to the hardware store in the morning and get a duplicate truck key made along with picking up a hide-a-key.

Very often something that costs time and money has to happen before I realize I could have preempted it with a little forethought. I’m glad this was something easily remedied, however.
