Avoid Solar Ray Damage

Many things can be damaged by the effects of solar rays. Human skin, paint, plastics, and cloth are all damaged by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) as well as heat (also known as infrared or IR rays). Here are a few ways to protect yourself and your belongings from solar damage.

Your body – Using sunscreen of at least SPF 30 is essential when spending much time outdoors. We typically use Neutrogena Suncare SPF 45. It is not greasy and protects well against both UVA and UVB. It is also a good idea to wear a hat and sun glasses, as well as things like sun protective swimwear.

Carpets and furniture – You can tint your windows. The most expensive, but best appearing are windows with tinted glass. Tinting films may also be added to existing windows. Adjustable blinds are useful to keep direct sunlight off interior surfaces. Sheer window treatments that let some sunlight in also work well to reduce admitted UV. (The sheer window treatments will eventually wear out due to sun damage, but you are sacrificing them in place of more expensive carpets and furniture.

Car interior – Use a dashboard cover. They are typically custom-fit carpet-like blankets that are non-reflecting. They may be held in place by gravity or with tape. They reduce driving glare and keep your dashboard like new. Protective treatments like armor-all or scotch guard help, but must constantly be re-applied. Seat covers are also a good thing.

Car exterior – There is nothing like a good wash and wax to keep your car’s exterior from getting oxidized. It should be washed once a month and waxed every 3 or 4 months. Even the “drive thru with fill-up” car wash is better than nothing.

House and yard – This one is pretty far out there, but trees are a wonderful thing. The shade from trees not only protects your house and outdoor belongings, but also helps to moderate your local climate. They also smell good. We have planted fruit trees along our back fence and have a large tulip tree in the front yard near the street.

It is pretty easy to prevent damage from the sun. Just limit direct exposure to damaging UV and IR rays.
